Daddy Cool’s Sauces Review Hotter than hell at one end of the scale but with a massive range, there’s something for all tastes in this excellent selection. Here’s our Daddy Cool’s Sauces Review… I recently came across the Daddy Cool’s stand at the Manchester Food Festival and having sampled their range I purchased 3 of their chutneys to try at home. They are bloody lovely, in summary, but if you’re looking for more details: Mango Chutney – not as sweet and jam like as some mango chutneys, this is a fresh tasting lighter chutney that was quite runny but tasted delicious. No real heat but then again you wouldn’t expect…
We all have lazy days when we just cannot be a**ed to cook. Everyone must have them as the convenience food sector continues to grow inexorably towards world domination. You think it’s China that’s going to take over the world? More likely to be the food companies. Anyway back to the point. I had one of those days this weekend and thought I would nip into the local M&S food outlet and try their £10 takeaway curry offer. The offer is two mains and two sides for £10. You can just about get the same deal from a local curry house on the outskirts of Manchester but in the city…
The nice people at KBE Drinks were kind enough to give sample bottle of Lion Stout to try at a recent trade show and although I am not always the biggest fan of stouts I thought it would be rude not to give it a go. So a stout from Sri Lanka? Not usually the first country I think of when considering the genre so here’s the marketing blurb first: “Lion Stout is one of the world’s most iconic stouts and is the only beer to be endorsed by Michael Jackson (insert obvious joke here!), the Beer Hunter.” No me neither. Never knew Mike was into his dark beers and…

Gary’s Scotch Bonnet & Mango Sauce
It’s always nice when someone gives you a present, so today my friend Gary brought in some of his homemade Scotch Bonnet & Mango Sauce. So we immediately hot footed it off to Lily’s to buy some of their excellent samosas to give it a taste test. Here’s what we thought: WOW – you certainly get a kick from the Scotch Bonnets but this is well balanced by the sweet mango making this a perfect dipping sauce with the samosas. It doesn’t have that overly sickly sweet taste that some mass produced sauces have, but a clean, hot taste and pours easily from the bottle. So it’s a great sauce,…
Nadiya’s Simple Spices – My Points of View!
So a few days ago I was asked to give some comments on Nadiya’s Simple Spices by the team at BBC’s Points of View. I must have talked a load of rubbish because I didn’t make the programme but more importantly I did buy the recipe book! Anyway enough waffle, here’s what I thought of the programme (I’ve not cooked any recipes yet). “Nadiya’s Simple Spices” is a delightful and educational television program that brings a fresh perspective to the world of cooking with spices. Hosted by the talented and charismatic Nadiya Hussain, this show is based on the premise of her personal “art masala” spice mix and demonstrates the…
Nana’s Chutneys are delicious
So it’s been a while since I bought these chutneys after seeing them pitched on Dragon’s Den one evening, but I have to say Nana’s Chutneys are some of the best on the market. I bought a three pack of Mango, Sweet Date and Garam Garlic and all are excellent. The Mango Chutney is not just another sweet goo that so many seem to be these days (although I do still like sweet goo I have to admit) but has a blend of cinnamon, saffron and cumin oil that gives it a much more interesting flavour. It’s still sweet, don’t get me wrong, but this is going to be my…

Fresh India by Meera Sodha
There are plenty of recipe books available today but it’s always great to receive a new one, so when my son got me a copy of Fresh India by Meera Sodha, it was top marks to him. This is a brilliant vegetarian recipe book and although I am not a vegetarian I have always enjoyed “no meat” dishes and Indian food presents you with a huge variety of extremely tasty choices. I also like to read a recipe book, not just flick a specific page, so it’s always nice when the author has taken the trouble to expand the contents over and above the recipe pages themselves and Meera has…

Dishoom Recipe Book Review
There seems to be a new recipe book published every day at the moment as we all turn ourselves into culinary wizards, or not, depending on your dedication to the kitchen.
Perhaps this is the influence of Bake Off and Master Chef, but either way I have invested in a few of the latest Indian recipe books and will review them over the next few weeks to let you know if, in my opinion, they’re any good or not for the average amateur chef.
