The most popular dish in British Indian restaurants. One in seven curries sold in the U.K. is a chicken tikka masala.
The orange-coloured curry is made of chicken tikka served in a masala (mixture of spices). Tomato and coriander are the most common base ingredients for the sauce. However, recipes for this curry vary greatly. It is also possible to get lamb or fish tikka masala.
The origin of the curry is a subject of heated debate. In 2009 there was a campaign for Glasgow to be given European Union Protected destination of origin. This was unsuccessful.
